Bomber Boys Landing This Sunday

Following on from their last Lion project Battle of Britain, Ewan McGregor and his brother Colin present a brand new 90 minute film Bomber Boys, airing 5th February on BBC One.

The brothers meet members of the legendary Bomber Command and recall the remarkable story of thousands of young men who fought, and often died, in the night skies above Nazi Europe.

Wartime Farm Coming Soon

The team behind the BBC2 hit series Victorian Farm and Edwardian Farm are taking on the farming challenges of the Second World War.

Wartime Farm is in production now. The team are currently running a farm for a full calendar year, using only the tools and materials of the era. And recreating the demands of an agricultural endeavour unparalleled in British history.

Young Soldiers - Homecoming on BBC Three

Following the acclaimed four part series following young soldiers from their first day in the army training at Catterick through to active service in Afghanistan, BBC Three will show a new film featuring the reflections of three of the soldiers who were followed, as the first of the recruits return from the front line.

Horrible Histories nominated for RTS Award

Lion's hit series Horrible Histories has been nominated for a Royal Television Society Award in the category of Best Children's Programme. The ceremony will be held on March 15th at the Grosvenor House Hotel - hosted by comedian Dara O’Briain.

Victorian Pharmacy returns to BBC Two

In a unique experiment, historian Ruth Goodman, Professor of Pharmacy Nick Barber and PhD student Tom Quick are recreating an authentic 19th century pharmacy.

The team discover the world of the pharmacy at the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign in 1837 - a world where traditional remedies such as leeches, Oil of Earthworm and potions laced with cannabis and opium were popular and regularly used.

Ruth gathers herbs and plants to make a traditional cough medicine for a customer to try while other volunteers try some safe cures from Victorian times – will any of them work or was it all just quackery?

The eight part series begins on Thursday 10 February at 10pm on BBC Two.

The Horrible Histories Interactive team have picked up a well deserved History Makers Award in the category Best Interactive Production. 

Managing Director Nick Catliff and Interactive Producer Michelle Feuerlicht graciously accepted the award on behalf of the team in New York last night.

Horrible Histories win British Comedy Award

Stop the press! This is a big one. Horrible Histories triumphed at the British Comedy Awards winning Best Sketch Show - fighting off tough competition from Harry and Paul and Armstrong and Miller.

Executive Producer Richard Bradley said:  "It’s the first time a children’s show has won a Comedy Award. So Horrible Histories made History! It’s an amazing accolade from the comedy community for a show that has already garnered three Baftas, the AIB Award for Children’s Programme, and the Prix Jeunesse 2010. The team would like to thank a number of people including Caligula, Nero, Elagabalus, King Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, the Aztecs and the Egyptians for the inspiration."

Commission Update

BBC3 has commissioned Lion to make a series to mark the 10-year anniversary of the war in Afghanistan.

Would You Join The Army? (5x60', working title) charts the lives of new recruits and their families over 18 months, from their first day in the army to frontline combat operations in Afghanistan. Lion Television exec producers are Donna Clark and Jeremy Mills and the series producer and director is Dov Freedman.

Horrible Histories BAFTA clean up!

Sunday night was a far from horrible night for Lion Television’s ‘Horrible Histories’ at the Children’s BAFTA’s. The series picked up not one, not two, but THREE BAFTA’s.

It is an amazing achievement. Congratulations to a wonderful team – spearheaded by Executive Producer Richard Bradley and led by Caroline Norris - that has worked so hard behind and in front of camera in pursuit of the historical education of the nation’s youth. The BAFTA awards were as follows:

Horrible Histories wins 2010 AIB Award

Horrible Histories has picked up an AIB Award in the category of 'Best Children's Factual Programme or Series'. Judges described it as "thoroughly engaging and educational – a format that will work in territories worldwide – looks great on the screen with inventive use of graphics and first-rate story-telling....."

I think congratulations are in order.

Syrian School wins Japan Prize 2010 Youth Award!

The Syrian School team has won the coveted Japan Prize 2010 Youth Award for their film on Palestinian rappers in Damascus – ‘Rap Refugees’. Director Max Baring attended the award ceremony in Tokyo last week in the presence of the Crown Prince of Japan no less.

Massive congratulations to Executive Producer Bill Locke, Max and the whole team.

Record-setting double Emmy win for Cash Cab team!

All hail the cab once more!
Our very own “Cash Cab” left the opposition trailing in its (low emission) exhaust fumes again. For the third year in a row the cab won the Daytime Emmy for Best Gameshow while our beloved Ben Bailey took his rightful place on the podium winning Best Host.

What a triumph for the cab and all who ride in her.

Duncan James to present Lion's new extreme game show on roller coasters for Watch

Lion TV's new format Scream if You Know the Answer! Has been commissioned by UKTV for its entertainment channel, Watch. This brand new family game show is played entirely on roller coasters.

Filmed at Thorpe Park and hosted by Blue’s Duncan James, this exciting and entertaining new 10 x 30 format will see members of the public team up with celebrities to compete a series of hilarious challenges - all of which take part ON the rides themselves - for a potential prize pot of £5,000. Celebrities confirmed for filming to date include Katie Price, Phil Tuffnell, Ben Shephard and Matt Willis. Scream if You Know the Answer! will premiere on UKTV’s pay TV channel Watch on Sunday 2nd May 2010.

Victorian Farm RTS Nomination

Lion’s hugely successful Victorian Farm series has been nominated for a Royal Television Society Award. The series, which attracted over 6 million viewers a week in 2009, was one of the year’s biggest hits on BBC2. The book of the series also went to No.1 on the Sunday Times best seller list. Executive Producer, David Upshal, says: “It’s great to see Victorian Farm honoured by the industry in this way. And it’s a huge boost to the team who are currently midway through filming the 12-part follow-up series Edwardian Farm.”

Horrible Histories nominated for a BAFTA

The production team behind Lion's hit children's series Horrible Histories are celebrating the fact that the series has been nominated for two Baftas at the 2009 EA British Academy Children's Awards. The nominations are in the categories of Best Writing and Best Factual programme. The nominees are Caroline Norris, Chloe Thomas, Steve Connelly, Giles Pilbrow, Ben Ward and Laurence Rickard

The series with its irreverent mix of gruesome and gory facts and laugh out loud humour was an instant hit with its young - and judging by the comments on You Tube - many not so young - viewers. Exec Producer Richard Bradley says 'We are thrilled that Lion's first venture into children's television has been acclaimed in this way. It's a tribute to all the efforts of an incredibly talented team in creating such a fresh, innovative and ambitious show.'

Edwardian Farm - In Production

Following the huge success of the Victorian Farm series, BBC Two is presenting the same intrepid team with a brand new set of challenges as they are forced to get to grips with the trials and tribulations of life on an Edwardian Farm.

Archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn and domestic historian Ruth Goodman will return to front Edwardian Farm, spending a full year delving into Britain's rural heritage.

They will make their home in a stunning new location, exploring the challenges posed by the British countryside at a time of great change and tumult; a time when farming was becoming increasingly mechanised at home, and abroad the world was moving gradually towards war.

As in the first series, the action will be based primarily on the farm, but the new setting will also allow the team to explore wider aspects of the working countryside, including rivers and coasts, boat-building, mining, fishing and market gardening.

Kwame goes On Tour With the Queen

Monday 10th August marks the start of Lion's new four part contemporary travelogue for Channel 4 - On Tour With the Queen, exploring the Queen's 1953 Coronation Tour of the Empire.

Over the course of the series, Kwame Kwei-Armah retraces the young Queen’s journey across five continents – from the Caribbean, Australasia and the Pacific Islands, to Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean.

Intercut with rarely-seen archive footage from the Queen’s tour, this is the story of Britain’s fight to keep its status as a world power, even while its Empire was slipping away. It is also the story of a 27-year-old woman sent on a mission to re-establish Britain’s place in the world.

Lion have produced 13 episodes based on Terry Deary's popular children's books (published by Scholastic) that have sold 21 million copies around the world.

The series starts on the 16th April 2009.

This is a story of intrigue, incest and murder, of a woman so ruthless she would have her own siblings murdered to ensure her hold on power.

Lion has recently completed production on Chinese Food Made Easy.

An exciting new cooking discovery show where Ching-He Huang reveals the secret of cooking quick, healthy and delicious Chinese cooking in the home.

It will air on BBC2, on Mondays at 8.30pm from July 7, 2008.

A book full of delicious recipes will also be available.
