Stonehenge: Secrets of the new stone
At the heart of Stonehenge lies the mysterious six-tonne altar stone — the only stone that lies flat and the only one whose origins have long remained unknown. For decades, archaeologists believed it came from Wales, like the famous bluestones. But groundbreaking research from Aberystwyth University suggests it may have travelled far further, from the far north of Scotland.
Following this remarkable discovery, Jason Fox and Tracy Borman journey across Britain, from Wiltshire to Orkney, exploring extraordinary Neolithic sites such as Ring of Brodgar and Skara Brae. Along the way, they investigate how the massive stone may have been transported over 500 miles and what its role might have been in ancient solstice ceremonies.
Their search uncovers new clues not only about the altar stone, but about the surprisingly sophisticated Stone Age communities who built Stonehenge — and the powerful connections that may have united people across Britain more than 4,500 years ago.
